THE BRITISH CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHING SOCIETY

Becoming A Member

The British Chinese Language Teaching Society (BCLTS) welcomes those who would like to work together to improve the national standard of Chinese language teaching in general and particularly in UK higher education institutions.

Types of membership

We offer three types of annual membership to Chinese teachers in the UK and Ireland:

  1. Full members are colleagues who are teaching Chinese in higher education institutions in the UK.
  2. Associate members are:

  • postgraduate students who are interested in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and are conducting relevant research projects;
  • colleagues who teach Chinese in primary schools, secondary schools or other similar institutions;
  • self-employed teachers.

              3. Institutional members are the Confucius Institutes, from each of which a maximum of 8 staff members can join each year.

Duration and benefits

  • The period covered by annual membership is from 1 October to 30 September of each academic year. The membership needs to renew annually.
  • All members are entitled to free registration for annual conference and workshop.
  • Existing members who pay the membership fees before 31 March can attend conference/workshop of the year with financial support.
  • Existing memberships which fail to renewal (membership fee not paid) by 31 March will be discountinued.
  • Full members will automatically become full members of the European Chinese Language Teaching Association.
  • All types of members can join our free mailing lists and the BCLTS Wechat Group.
  • Full member transfer: the CI (Confucius Institutes) Core Teachers can join associate members in the 1styear and then apply to be transferred to become full members after one academic year. New full members’ benefits will take effect from the 2ndyear of being full members.

Current annual rates

  • Full membership (new): £35 (new and full members to renew after 31 March)
  • Associate membership (new and renewal): £35
  • Institutional membership: £250
  • Please note: as agreed at 2018 AGM and decided at the committee meeting, any discontinued full members, should they wish to renew their membership or re-join, their membership will be regarded as a new full member in terms of membership benefits in the 1st year. This means they will have to pay the £35 membership fee, and cannot enjoy all the financial benefits during the 1st year.
